Algae powered lamp

Last year, I wrote about Mike Thompson, recently graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven. He's a young designer/artist working at the edge of science & design. I love his work! His fascinating project 'Blood Lamp' was displayed at sciencefest Discovery 2009, and this year he exhibited his work in Milano! Today, I received a press release from his latest idea: Latro, algae powered lamp.




Mike Thompson:'In 2010, scientists from Yansei and Stanford University pioneered a technique by where 30-nanometre wide gold electrodes were inserted into the photosynthesising organs – chloroplasts – of algal cells, thus managing to draw a small electrical current from algae during photosynthesis. As advances in nanotechnology lead to increasingly energy efficient products, plant life such as algae will become attractive sources for tapping energy. Latro is one such product that responds to this future market.

Latro (latin for thief) incorporates the natural energy potential of algae and the functionality of a hanging lamp into its design. Synthesising both nature and technology in one form, Latro is a living, breathing product. Algae are incredibly easy to cultivate, requiring only sunlight, carbon dioxide (CO2) and water, offering a remarkably simple way of producing energy. Breathing into the handle of the lamp provides the algae with CO2, whilst the side spout allows the addition of water and release of oxygen. Placing the lamp outside in the daylight, the algae use sunlight to synthesize foods from CO2 and water. A light sensor monitors the light intensity, only permitting the leeching of electrons when the lux level passes the threshold – avoiding algae malnourishment. The energy is subsequently stored in a battery ready to be called upon during hours of darkness. Owners of Latro are required to treat the algae like a pet – feeding and caring for the algae rewarding them with light'.

Mike Thompson en de Dutch Design Week

Op Discovery09 liet Mike Thompson, vers afgestudeerd aan de Design Academy in Eindhoven, al zijn 'Blood Lamp' zien. Een totale publiekslieveling: Mike is die avond bijna niet van zijn plek geweest, omdat het publiek ontzettend nieuwsgierig was, en met hem in gesprek raakte over zijn idee erachter. Vanaf zaterdag kun je zijn nieuwste werk gaan bekijken.

Dit weekend begint in Eindhoven namelijk de Dutch Design Week: workshops, tentoonstellingen, lezingen, speciale winkeltjes, etentjes, performances, rondleidingen etc. etc. Het programma is geweldig en overweldigend (zie www.dutchdesignweek.nl). Design minded Nederland moet daar de komende week naartoe, zoveel is duidelijk.

Onderdeel van de week is ook altijd de 'graduation show' van de Design Academy. De academy heeft nogal een roerig jaar achter de rug, met studenten die haar aanklaagden omdat de titels op de diploma's 'fake' waren (je bent namelijk geen echte MA als je daar afstudeert. De hard core designers hebben daar echter schijt aan, vertelde Mike mij, die doen gewoon hun ding anyway). Hoe dan ook zal er in De Witte Dame toch als vanouds een eindexamen expositie plaatsvinden, die zoals altijd de moeite waard is.

Wie er een dagje van maakt, kan ook lekker en hip eten in Eindhoven, bijvoorbeeld bij Usine (een soort Dudok), of bij Het Tijdelijke Restaurant, of bij The Potatoe Eaters (van de food designers van House of Origin). Google maar eens vanaf de DDW website op het onderdeel 'food and drinks'.

Breakthroughs in biological science have redefined the capabilities of the human body. A new frontier has opened for design, allowing the employment of the body’s material to cultivate products within the human body. We might, therefore, refer to the body as a factory, with its own natural chain of production, capable of producing life.

If man were to grow an optimized material he must nurture a relationship with the object, physically interacting with it under the skin. Through this process, the object is personalised, carrying the indexical traces of its interactions and experiences in its form. If man treats his cells right they will grow.

‘Growing Pains’ is a term referring to the pain symptoms commonly felt by children during development. Metaphorically, it can also be applied to the growth we experience throughout life both physically and emotionally. Through tissue engineering we can cultivate objects within our bodies that not only represent, but participate in our most profound life experiences.

Profile

Mike Thompson explores both old and new technologies in order to generate fresh relationships between function and behaviour, questioning common codes of conduct. After graduating from the IM Masters course at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2009, Mike set up his own studio specialising in scenario design. Mike currently lives and works in Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

Blood Lamp op Discovery09

Op 25 september vindt in Nemo in Amsterdam voor de 4e keer Discovery plaats (waarover later meer). Een van de onderdelen van het kunstprogramma is de 'Blood Lamp' van de zojuist aan de Eindhovense Design Academy afgestudeerde Mike Thompson (www.miket.co.uk). De lamp werkt alleen als je de bovenkant afbreekt, een tablet erin gooit en een paar druppels van je eigen bloed bij het mengsel gooit. Het idee erachter:

Het is voor ons bijna vanzelfsprekend dat het licht het doet als we een knopje induwen. Maar wat als dat niet meer zo vanzelfsprekend is, als we zuinig aan moeten doen met energie. Welke momenten vinden we belangrijk genoeg om daar electriciteit bij te gebruiken? Zouden we bereid zijn om een stukje van ons eigen lichaam (in dit geval bloed) op te offeren voor bijvoorbeeld het laten branden van een lamp?

De installatie van Mike Thompson is zeker niet de grootste installatie op Discovery, maar zet wel tot denken aan. Bekijk ook zijn andere projecten eens op zijn website. En extra info: in oktober is de eindexamenshow van de Design Academy, dan kunnen we allemaal weer die spannende dingen gaan bekijken waar nu nog een expositie embargo op zit...
