For those of you who are visiting Transmediale in Berlin!

'Join us on january 27 at 7 pm for the opening of
Paul Vanouse: Fingerprints...at the Ernst Schering Foundation’s project space, Unter den Linden 32-34, D-10117 Berlin

Fingerprints… showcases performative installations and live laboratories by US-American biomedia artist Paul Vanouse. Curated by Jens Hauser, this exhibition marks a continuation of the Ernst Schering Foundation’s effort to promote the public discussion about the role of images in art and science.
Exhibition Dates: January 28 – March 26, 2011, Monday through Saturday, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm; admission free.

Fingerprints… presents the world premiere of the Suspect Inversion Center, an operational laboratory in which Vanouse creates identical “genetic fingerprints” of criminals and celebrities from his own DNA. It also features new motifs of the Latent Figure Protocol, as well as the Relative Velocity Inscription Device – a cynical molecular race reflecting on biologically legitimized racism, in which bits of DNA, instead of bodies, compete by testing their “genetic fitness”.

Vanouse’s biotechnological installations do not only challenge the codes and images of contemporary knowledge production but also question the methods behind (natural) scientific findings in general: What do uncritically accepted commonplace catchwords such as “genetic fingerprint” conceal? To what extend does the technical construction of alleged naturalness notarize clichés and prejudices? Vanouse diverts biotechnologies and scientific imaging techniques from their intended uses, and amalgamates auratic iconography with technical images. Employing gel electrophoresis as artistic medium, he intentionally applies a method that bears analogies to photography: while photography allowed viewers to draw seemingly objective conclusions about human qualities based on physiognomic characteristics of the body, today, increasingly questionable social conclusions are derived from ontologized body fragments such as genes.

Fingerprints… is an official Satellite Partner of transmediale.11, where it will be echoed by the live installation Latent Figure Protocol.

http://www.transmediale.de/content/schering-stiftung-fingerprints-0
http://www.transmediale.de/de/content/schering-stiftung-fingerprints

On February 4 2011 at 2 pm an accompanying panel with Paul Vanouse, Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, Simon Cole, Jens Hauser and Marie-Luise Angerer takes place within the transmediale.11 conference at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

http://www.transmediale.de/content/fingerprints-identity-indexicality-and-biomedia-focus-discussion-track-1
http://www.transmediale.de/de/content/fingerprints-identity-indexicality-and-bio-media-focus-discussion-track-1

On the occasion of the exhibition, the anthology Fingerprints…Index, Imprint, Trace, edited by Jens Hauser, will appear in the Ernst Schering Foundation’s publication series with argobooks and will be presented at the Ernst Schering Foundation on March 24, 2011 at 7 pm. http://www.argobooks.de/

Press Inquieries:
Friederike Plucinski, Projekt Manager Schering Stiftung
Tel. +49.30.20 62 29 60
plucinski@scheringstiftung.de '.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009978067673211329.post-61581014897528564752011-01-19T03:15:00.000-08:002011-01-19T03:55:57.408-08:00Interview: Jalila EssaidiDecember 8th last year, in Naturalis (the museum of natural history in The Netherlands), it was announced what the three winning projects of the first 'Designers & Artists 4 Genomics' were. It's a new contest, aimed at teaming up big genomics research institutions with young artists and designers (for more info, check the wesbite of the organisation who took the initiative for this competition, Waag Society http://www.waag.org/project/genomicsaward ).

One of the winners is Jalila Essaidi. Her project is aimed at building transgenic bullet proof skin, by giving human skin spider web abilities. I know Jalila from the 2009 Honours Class on BioArt I coordinated in Leiden; she's a really cheerful, eager to learn girl, with a lot of energy. I was wondering how the project was going, so I asked if she would agree in being interviewed. And she did! The interview is in Dutch. Because it is quite long, I haven't translated it yet. If you happen to be interested, but can't read Dutch, please let me know, and I will translate it anyway! Contact me at olgacrapels at gmail.com

Wanneer: Zaterdag 12 februari, vertrek 10.00 vanuit Leiden, terugkomst ca. 19.30 in Leiden
Kosten: euro 37,50 pp (retour busreis, lunch, inleiding in onderwerp en rondleiding)
Uiterste aanmelddatum: 30 januari (maximaal 30 mensen, wie het eerst komt…)
Info + aanmelden: olgacrapels at gmail.com

Over BioArt

Interesse? Installations, smart phone apps, lab experiments, events, performances etc, all for a major exposition called HUMAN+ starting April 15 this year! Max of 7000 euro grant per proposal. The deadline is rather soon: January 31. So make sure you send them your plans on time!!

From their website:

'HUMAN+ is an interactive exhibition experience looking into the future of the human race. Will enhancement of humans become the norm? What types of enhancements will we choose? What is our genetic future? Will computer technologies continue to change the way we socialise?

HUMAN+ will explore the implications of enhancement on how we define ourselves. Could smart pills, personalised medicine, cognitive enhancement, or genetic manipulation change us into something other than human? Will converging technologies in robotics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, information technology and aesthetics create a new race? We invite proposals that will create a dialogue around the scientific, artistic, social and philosophical implications of using science and technology to enhance human capabilities.

A key part of the exhibition experience will be a HUMAN+ ‘Lab-in-the-Gallery’ experience – a pioneering research-led gallery experience where real research experiments involving large-scale visitor participation are conducted through open-ended experimentation. We are seeking proposals for research experiments to be carried out in Science Gallery, in addition to engaging installations and artworks.

We will also be creating a rich programme of accompanying events and workshops, including discussions, performances, high-profile talks, plus web-focused interactions, games and any other truly collaborative ‘human-centric’ experiences'.

It sounds amazing! He's a young designer/artist working at the edge of science & design. I love his work! His fascinating project 'Blood Lamp' was displayed at sciencefest Discovery 2009, and this year he exhibited his work in Milano! Today, I received a press release from his latest idea: Latro, algae powered lamp.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JmFIMjA5EPQ/TAQck0X14uI/AAAAAAAAAaU/GgsRZUpF-BI/s400/mike+thompson.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477534465648878306" />

Mike Thompson:'In 2010, scientists from Yansei and Stanford University pioneered a technique by where 30-nanometre wide gold electrodes were inserted into the photosynthesising organs – chloroplasts – of algal cells, thus managing to draw a small electrical current from algae during photosynthesis. As advances in nanotechnology lead to increasingly energy efficient products, plant life such as algae will become attractive sources for tapping energy. Latro is one such product that responds to this future market.

Latro (latin for thief) incorporates the natural energy potential of algae and the functionality of a hanging lamp into its design. Synthesising both nature and technology in one form, Latro is a living, breathing product. Algae are incredibly easy to cultivate, requiring only sunlight, carbon dioxide (CO2) and water, offering a remarkably simple way of producing energy. Breathing into the handle of the lamp provides the algae with CO2, whilst the side spout allows the addition of water and release of oxygen. Placing the lamp outside in the daylight, the algae use sunlight to synthesize foods from CO2 and water. A light sensor monitors the light intensity, only permitting the leeching of electrons when the lux level passes the threshold – avoiding algae malnourishment. The energy is subsequently stored in a battery ready to be called upon during hours of darkness. Owners of Latro are required to treat the algae like a pet – feeding and caring for the algae rewarding them with light'.

More info about Mike can be found on his website: www.miket.co.ukUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009978067673211329.post-36871093092972110862010-05-12T06:46:00.000-07:002010-05-12T06:51:30.026-07:00Bio:Fiction festival - invitation to make a movie on synthetic biology!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 253px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JmFIMjA5EPQ/S-qyHUFhKNI/AAAAAAAAAaE/c7LDEvIMPy8/s400/bio+fiction+film.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470380536115570898" />

In my mailbox I found this message about a festival in Vienna which might be interesting for film makers interested in the field of synthetic biology:

'The 1st Bio:Fiction Science, Art & Filmfestival aims at attracting public awareness to synthetic biology and its ramifications for our daily life in the future.
Synthetic biology is the design and construction of new biological systems not found in nature. Synthetic biology aims at creating new forms of life for practical purposes. By applying engineering principles to biology scientists will be able to design life forms much different from breeding or traditional genetic engineering.

We want to encourage filmmakers to share their cinematic visions of a present or future society shaped by synthetic biology. What is your view on a world living with synthetic life forms? Your approach is up to you - the filmmaker, scientists or artist - the entries can be on science, fiction, or science fiction. We welcome regular short film, animation or documentary film. The main criteria is that synthetic biology has to be reflected somehow in the work, but how you do it is up to you.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

Bio:Fiction Award - Short Fiction
Bio:Fiction Award - Documentary Film
Bio:Fiction Award - Animation
Online-Audience Award
Special Award of the Jury
(the prize money in each category will be announced soon)

On http://www.bio-fiction.com you will find more useful and inspiring information on synthetic biology, the entry form and the regulations of the filmfestival.
The nominated films will be presented in public at the festival event in Vienna, Austria, in May 2011. Finally, a Bio:Fiction Award ceremony will build the highlight of the festival.

The deadline for film entries is the 15th of July 2010

There is no entry fee for submitting films.

http://www.bio-fiction.com'.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009978067673211329.post-61607215630975040272010-05-12T06:26:00.000-07:002010-05-12T06:42:15.845-07:00Knitted lab rat/Gebreid proefdier<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JmFIMjA5EPQ/S-qss0yEfQI/AAAAAAAAAZ8/MpTR9HdwjDw/s400/rat+dissection.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470374583477763330" />

(English Below!)
During the last decades various laboratory studies have established descriptive modes and methods of investigation. For instance, Hans-Joerg Rheinberger´s concept of ‘epistemic objects’, the notion of Bruno Latour on objects as agents and ‘science in action’ as well as Karin Knorr Cetina´s investigations on the reconfigurations of relations to the world within laboratories.
Furthermore, artists have explored the hidden agendas and practices of biological laboratories in various projects, such as Hannes Rickli´s long term study “Überschuss. Videogramme des Experimentierens” or the work at SymbioticA- Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts.

The summer school brings together artists and researchers who work in the context of biological laboratories.

Besides methodological and theoretical discussions we want to stimulate the exchange between research in arts and humanities. We would also like to mediate experience of laboratory work by practical exercises, e.g. in the KHM Laboratory for Experimental Computer Science (Lab3). Therefore, the program includes project presentations by the participants, BioArt and laboratory workshops in addition to plenary and public lectures.

Faculty
Prof. Dr. Peter Bexte, KHM Cologne (Art History)
Kathrin Friedrich, KHM Cologne (Media Studies and STS)
Dr. Gabriele Gramelsberger, KHM Cologne/FU Berlin (Philosophy of Science)
Dr. Karin Harrasser, KHM Cologne (Cultural Theory and Media Studies)
Dr. Werner Kogge, FU Berlin (Philosophy of Biology)
Nina Samuel, FU Berlin (Art History)
Lasse Scherffig, KHM Cologne (Information and Cognitive Science)
Prof. Dr. Georg Trogemann, KHM Cologne (Experimental Computer Science)

Guests
Dr. Adrian Mackenzie, ESRC Lancaster (STS and Philosophy of Biology and Technology)
Prof. Dr. Hans-Joerg Rheinberger, MPI for the History of Science Berlin (History and Epistemology of Experimentation in Life Sciences) (to be confirmed)
Prof. Hannes Rickli, ZHdK Zuerich (Artist and Contemporary Arts Research)
SymbioticA- Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, Australia, Video ConferenceUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009978067673211329.post-46370417087412895092010-02-10T12:42:00.000-08:002010-02-10T13:20:27.840-08:00Tip: Sophie Calle in Tilburg

Gaan! Het is toch wel typisch dat in een zo onreligieus geacht wetenschappelijk klimaat voortdurend boeken over bijvoorbeeld natuurkunde verschijnen met titels als 'The Mind of God', 'God and the New Physics', 'God and the Astronomers' en 'Does God play Dice?'.

Art is aligned with the improvised, intuitive and creative moment,
while natural science affirms itself through the use of mathematical methods
and the generation of instrumentally recorded images as a source for measurable
and undeniable truths.

The exhibition of Nicole Degenhardt and Frank Schäpel,ARE THERE BACTERIA IN THE ROOMS OF MONTE CARLO, questions the setting of norms and values in knowledge production and thereby troubles the conditions for objectifying rationality of scientific disciplines. To what extent is the hegemony of natural science still appropriate, in view of possible errors in empirical methodologies and of residual doubt over adequately decoding results in the given time. How does natural science deal with phenomena(such as death, the unconscious, extraterrestrial life) that elude empirical verification, while on the same time seem to transcend our imaginative abilities?Could art here accompany the natural sciences and contribute to the “creation of a contemporary, viable human consciousness” (Frank Schäpel)?

Frank Schäpel’s studies of the body and planets bring together the genuine and
productive achievements of both disciplines. Schäpel’s clinically true-to-detail
image production aesthetic requires a neutral examination that, beyond a rational
argumentation for the apparent, demands further aspects of perception, as well as
imaginary references.

In her video work, recorded in the collection of anatomical preparations at the
Berlin Medical Historical Museum,Nicole Degenhardt also questions the discrepancy
between natural science’s claim to truth construction and consistently emerging
enigmas, where familiar perception- and classification schemes stagnate and new
research methods between rationality and creativity arerequired.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009978067673211329.post-71419851854337743552010-01-20T09:02:00.001-08:002010-01-20T09:16:08.876-08:00Aanmelden BioArt Honours Class voor 1 maart!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JmFIMjA5EPQ/S1c3wg6zyQI/AAAAAAAAATM/5Ld3dtTtTwI/s400/werk2009+061.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428869182428268802" />

Interessant EN leuk! Zien? Klik hier voor hun website Street with a view. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009978067673211329.post-89617464718094026162010-01-10T07:42:00.000-08:002010-01-10T08:05:20.963-08:00Pool expedities bij Verbeke Foundation<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 265px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JmFIMjA5EPQ/S0n1pFI38lI/AAAAAAAAATE/NUQc2e921go/s400/verbeke+pool+expeditie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425137312247312978" />

Performativity between science, media, and art.

Call for presentations
Art as well as science strive to understand and grasp the world, they
consider the nature of things, the coming into being of objects, the many
ways in which life is performed. Science and art communicate and interact,
they influence and "co-create" each other and- as we assume - reciprocally
depend on each other.

In recent years this relation has become more manifest. As scientific
thoughts left the labs, researchers entered the cultural world. The spectrum
of such cultural activities encompasses exhibitions or museums (e.g. European
Science Fair, science museums); it embraces science fiction literature by
physicians turned into prominent writers (like Michael Crichton or Carl
Djerassi) and goes way beyond turning the scientific world mundane in TV
series such as CSI.

At the same time, various artists have started to reflect about scientific
practices. While certain artists considered their work as research, others
began to work with scientific objects (e.g. Mark Dixon, Richard Barnes with
natural history collections, dioramas and stuffed animals). Some now go about
to explore the leftovers of a scientific society (like Scott Hocking who
tells Latourian fotoromanzas of homeless scrappers, picking up the material
leftovers of a technoscientific society), or comment on biomedical
technologies (like the Indian artist Shilpa Gupta with her web-installation
on the international organ trade).

These works and commentaries highlight scientific trends especially in
biomedicine and biotechnology in a twofold manner: Artists as well as
scientists continuously contribute to cultural practice, to political and
social statements, while they challenge assumptions about what it means to
produce scientific or artistic knowledge.

In our stream we would like to discuss the roots, agents and purposes of this
practices by a deeper going analysis of concrete examples (from literature,
new media, movies, classical and modern art, exhibitions). We will also ask
how science and art are performed and what they precisely transform when they interact and we wonder whether and if so how methodologies, contents, topics, and researchers themselves are altered. Furthermore, we are interested in socio-cultural analyses of how these interactions might influence the relationship between science and society, or understandings of expertise and lay knowledge and, last but not least, what scientific research may be about.

We, therefore, invite scholars from all disciplinary strands as well as
artists with an interest in these questions to give a talk or a presentation
of a work of art that we could show and discuss during the stream.

Abstracts of no more than 500 words should be sent by email, see instructions on this website: http://events.unitn.it/en/easst010/abstract-submission.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
